GINKO BILOBA:
Ginkgo biloba is a tree from whose leaves are extracted a substance to which remarkable capabilities are attributed. In addition to the enhancement of memory, this substance is also felt to prevent the development of Alzheimer’s disease as well as a useful treatment for the same.
Proponents of this substance believe that it dilates the blood vessels leading to the brain and in the brain resulting in an increase in oxygen and improved glucose utilization. This is further based on the presumption that Alzheimer’s is solely caused by derangement's in the supply of those two substances.
There are many substances that claim to improve one’s mental capacity, but few studies available documenting such phenomena. There is however, good information suggesting that one can increase intellectual performance by continued subjection to challenging tasks requiring the acquisition of new skills. Learning a new language, teaching yourself to play a musical instrument, or taking classes will not only improve your ability to think and remember, but leave you with something to show for your hard work. Coincidentally, people engaging in this kind of life-long learning are less likely to develop the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease even when autopsies reveal that they have some of the same cellular changes seen in the brains of people with this disease.
Traditional Uses: Ginkgo's use in China dates back to 2800B.C. It was mainly used for breathing difficulties and for it's beneficial effect on the brain.
Current Status: There have been more than 50 double-blind clinical trials showing Ginkgo's favorable effects on vascular insufficiency and age related decrease in brain function. Ginko may be useful for the forgetfulness many post menopausal women complain of. Some women are using Ginko in combination with Hawthorn for forgetfulness. One small study showed Ginko may reverse the sexual dysfunction sometimes seen in patients using certain antidepressants. Ginko may hold promise in the treatment of PMS as well.
Ginkgo is one of the most thoroughly researched herbs in
Europe where it is commonly prescribed. It has a beneficial effect on the
vascular system - the network of blood vessels delivering blood and oxygen
to various organs in the body. Studies show that Ginkgo increases blood flow
to the brain and helps in improving memory and reducing the signs of
senility, including Alzheimer's disease. It also helps to prevent blood
clots and works to improve circulation. Individuals experiencing tinnitus
(`ringing in the ears') and vertigo (dizziness) have experienced significant
improvement when using Ginkgo.
