MUCOLYTICS
Mucolytics that destroy or dissolve mucus are used to
treat sinus and lung conditions that involve excessive mucus and serious
breathing problems. These medicines come in tablet form or as a liquid that is
inhaled as a fine mist through a nebulizer. Acetylcysteine ( Mucomyst) is a
mucolytic that liquefies or dissolves mucus so that it may be coughed up.
Administered in high doses, prescription mucolytics thin secretions and allow
for easier drainage. Once thinned, the mucus is usually expelled through
coughing, but sometimes it must be removed by suction.

Mucolytics thin mucus to make it less sticky and easier to cough up from the lungs and airways leading to the lungs (bronchial tubes ). They are no longer commonly used.
In chronic bronchitis, the lungs produce too much mucus. Because chronic bronchitis is often present in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), mucolytics may provide some relief from symptoms.
Long-term treatment with mucolytics may provide some relief of symptoms for people with COPD. Studies indicate that mucolytics may decrease the risk of having future COPD exacerbations and decrease their severity.
Side effects of acetylcysteine include:
Bronchospasm can be a serious side effect of acetylcysteine. However, a mild stomach upset is the most likely side effect.
