Increased fibre intake of the gum and pectin variety can slow the process of sugar absorption after a meal, due to their quality of lining the gut and intestines, thereby reducing the amount of insulin a diabetic needs at any one time. Supplements that have aided diabetes are: Chromium (1-2 mg daily for 6 months; or 50mg 3 times daily); Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF); Potassium, 99mg 3 times daily; Chelated Zinc 50mg 1-3 times daily; water 6-8 glasses daily. A substance which produces particular symptoms in a healthy person given to an ill person will cure the ill person. This form of medicine although able to be traced to ancient times,  was devised by Dr Samuel Hahnemann. He found that the smaller the remedy the better the effect it had on the illness and the less side effects it had. Illness is approached by activating the body's healing process from within, instead of suppressing the symptoms. They are non-addictive and non-toxic, but must be prepared due to particular processes. They can be used in chronic as well as acute illnesses, or accidents. As in all treatments homoeopathic have their limitations and in all serious illnesses it is wisest to consult a physician first. However in cases where orthodox prescription medicines have been exhausted and found not to effect a remedy, homoeopathic have often been found to be helpful. Disillusionment can occur with ineffective prescribing leading to inefficient results, it is best to consult an experienced registered homoeopath when looking to treat any illness.

Pain relief:

DL- Phenylalanine (DLPA) has been found to be a non-toxic non-addictive form of pain relief. People who suffer from chronic pain conditions have been discovered to produce lower levels of endorphin activity in their blood and cerebro-spinal fluid. DLPA restores natural endorphin levels and can assist the body's ability to reduce pain naturally without the use of drugs. It is also capable of selective pain blocking, effectively alleviating chronic pain discomfort but leaving the body's natural defence mechanisms for short term acute pain (cuts, knocks, burns etc) unhindered. The effect of DLPA often exceeds or equals that of morphine and other opiate derivatives. Pain relief can be more effective over time (without developing tolerance), has a strong antidepressant action, can provide continuous pain relief for up to a month without additional medication, is non-toxic and can be combined with other therapies without adverse interactions. Correct dosages vary with individuals experiences of pain. The best way to begin a regime of DLPA is with 6 tablets (usually 375 mg) in two tablet doses 3 times a day approximately 15 minutes before meals. Pain relief should occur within the first 4 days, but in some cases it has taken up to 3-4 weeks. If no difference has been noted in the first 3 weeks double the dosage for an additional 2-3 weeks. If still not effective discontinue the regimen. It has been found that 5-15% of users do not respond to DLPA's analgesic properties.

Vitamin toxicity:

Some vitamins can be toxic in large doses or for people with particular medical conditions. Always consult your physician if you are taking any prescription drugs before beginning specifically directed vitamin regimens. Some of the vitamins in cautionary category are:

Vitamin A  more than 100, 000 IU can produce toxic effects in adults if taken for many months, and more than 18, 500 IU produce toxic effects in children. Large doses of Vitamin A should not be taken by pregnant women. Vitamin A absorption is lessened if strenuous physical activity is undergone within 4 hours of taking it. It should not be taken if an individual is prescribed the anti acne and skin cell stimulator drug, Accutane (also known as Roaccutane, or isotretinoin, available as a cream or in pills). At least 10, 000 IU of vitamin A is needed if more than 400 IU of vitamin E is taken.

It should not be taken with mineral oil. Cholestrol reducing drugs can increase the need for vitamin A.

Prolonged use of any one B vitamin can result in losses in the other B vitamins (when taking any B vitamin singularly in a large dose,  also take a B complex to avoid this). Pregnant women need to check with their doctors before taking sustained doses of over 50mg of vitamin B6. B6 should not be taken by people under L-Dopa treatment for Parkinson's Disease. Daily doses of 2-10 grams can cause neurological disorders.  Daily doses of over 500 mg. are not recommended. Choline (B group) is not recommended for anyone in the depressive phase of manic depressive disorder as it can deepen this particular type of depression. Large doses of B2 or A can cause sun sensitivity. Folic acid (B group) in high doses is not recommended for those with a history of convulsive disorders, hormone related cancer, and can mask the symptoms of pernicious anaemia. Niacin (B3) should be used cautiously for those with severe diabetes, glaucoma, peptic ulcers, or impaired liver function. Doses of over 100 mg can produce side effects such as burning itching skin, but will go away after reducing the intake.

Large amounts of Vitamin C can deactivate the blood thinner warfarin (prescribed as Coumadin).  Doctors should be informed of  your Vitamin C intake as it can result in false negative results in tests for blood in stool specimens, as well as lab tests for sugar in the blood and urine. Vitamin C intake can effect doses of pills taken for diabetes and heart conditions. It also should not be taken by cancer patients undergoing radiation or chemotherapy.

Excess of Vitamin D can result in hypercalcaemia.  Over 25, 000 IU daily over a period of time can produce toxic effects in adults, and dosages of over 5, 000 IU can effect some individuals adversely. Those with heart conditions should consult a physician about Vitamin D and E intake, especially if using the drug Lanoxin.

Vitamin E should be used cautiously by anyone with overactive thyroid, diabetes, high blood pressure, or Rheumatic Heart Disease. (If you have any of these conditions start low and gradually work up the dose, but always consult a physician before beginning a regimen. Vitamin E can worsen the condition of imbalance between the two sides of the heart found in Rheumatic Heart Disease, and elevate blood pressure in hypertensives if taken at a high dose suddenly. All increases or decreases of vitamin E should be gradual.

Vitamin K (Menadione) more than 500 mcg of synthetic vitamin K is not recommended. It can reverse the effects of anti-coagulant drugs.

Antibiotics are reduced in their effectiveness when taken with supplements. (It is recommended that supplements are taken at least an hour before or two hours after prescription antibiotics). Acidipholus yoghurt should be taken after a course of antibiotics to restore the naturally beneficial bacteria in the intenstines.

Calcium excessive daily intake of over 2,000 mg, might lead to hypercalcemia.

Chlorine over 15 g can cause unpleasant side effects. Chlorinated water destroys vitamin E, and increases the need for yoghurt to replace intenstinal bacteria.

Fluorine of over 20 to 80 mg can be toxic.

Iron supplements in the form of Ferrous sulphate cause losses of vitamin E. If you are using a supplement containing Ferrous Sulphate E should be taken at least 8 hours before or after. Organic Iron supplements do not destroy vitamin E. Excessive doses of Iron are thought to be hazardous for children.

Magnesium over 3,000mg should not be taken by those with kidney malfunction. Large amounts over extended periods of time can be toxic if your calcium and phosphorus intakes are high.

PABA is contradicted with methotrexate - a cancer fighting drug.

Potassium Chloride over 25 g can cause toxicity.

RNA-DNA supplements increase serum uric acid levels and should not be taken by anyone with gout.

Sodium Chloride over 14g daily can produce toxic effects.

Excessive Zinc intake can result in iron and copper losses (over 150 mg), and  you need to insure you are getting enough vitamin A if you are taking Zinc.

Those with low thyroid production can have further reduction in iodine levels from large amounts of raw cabbage (coleslaw) intakes.

Warts:

Thuja. Warts can also be caused by an imbalance or deficiency of the tissue salt Chloride of potash (kali. mur.).

Whooping Cough:

Drosera: also when a child has rapidly recurring fits of coughing with great difficulties breathing and possibly vomiting, or often choking.

Worms & Paracites:

Para- X (Natures Way); Black Walnut (Natures Way extracts); Para- VF Syrup (Natures Way extracts); Can be called anthelminics (parasite eliminating) herbs: Hyssop, Rue, Elecampane, Ginger, Horehound, Peppermint, Tansey, Wormwood, Plantain, Kawakawa, Harakeke.

modern medicine's perspective | links & resources

Overview:

Homeopathy is a system of medical practice based on the principle that diseases can be cured by drugs that produce the same effects as the symptoms (causes) of the disease. They essentially work in the same way as vaccines do in preventing infection and illness.

Description:

The homeopathic doctrine was first formulated by German physician Samuel Hahnemann in 1796. Homeopaths also believe that small doses of a drug are more successful than large doses. The American Institute of Homeopathy was founded in 1844.

Homeopathic medicine had its greatest popularity in the late 19th century here in the United States, when 15% of the doctors in this country were homeopaths. However, with the advent of modern medicine, homeopathy began to look old and stodgy and its popularity took a nosedive.

However, since 1980 homeopathy has seen a resurgence of interest in the United States and the U.K.; homeopathic books can be found in many bookstores and homeopathic physicians in most towns and cities.

Delphinium Staphysagnia

Delphinium Staphysagnia: Homeopathic plant used to treat an array of neurological diseases.

Method:

Classical homeopathy rests on three principles: the law of similars, the single medicine, and the minimum dose. The following chart adaquately describes the three principles:

The Law of Similars
A disease is cured by a medicine which creates symptoms similar to those the patient is experiencing in a healthy person.

Hence, an important part of the prescription of a homeopathic medicine is a lengthy interview to determine all the symptoms the patient is experiencing.

The homeopathic physician then determines which medicine best matches the symptoms that the patient is experiencing and prescribes it.

The Single Medicine
The principle of the single remedy states that a single medicine should cover all the symptoms the patient is experiencing: mental, emotional, and physical.

A classical homeopath would not prescribe one medicine for a headache and another for an upset stomach, he or she would find a single medicine that covered both symptoms.

The Minimum Dose (2 parts)
1. The homeopathic physician only prescibes a small number of doses of the homeopathic medicine and waits to see what effect the medicine has.

2. The medicine is given in an infinitesimal dose. Homeopaths have discovered that the effect of homeopathic medicines is strengthed upon successive dilutions as long as the medicine is violently shaken between each dilution. Medicines are typically used in very high dilutions such as 30C (1 part in 10^-60) or 200C (1 part in 10^-400).

Homeopathy always examines the patient's mental make-up in all cases and remedies are given acting at the level of mind and body together, thus eradicating the disease. This medical system tackles the mind-body disorders with definite therapeutic agents. Homeopathic remedies are capable of influencing the state of mind. By relieving such motions, homeopathic remedies bring about harmonious state of health. Thus Homeopathy demonstrates the possibility of the highest goal of medicine, the therapy for the person rather than for the disease alone. Homeopathic remedies can cure mental and emotional disturbed states.

Homopathic practitioners believe in the holistic medical model, which states that an illness is specific to the individual. Hering's Laws of Cure were developed by Dr. Constantine Hering, who stated that healing progresses from the deepest part of the body to the extremities (arms and legs); from the emotional and mental aspects to the physical; and from the upper part of the body (head, neck, ears, throat) to the lower parts of the body (fingers, abdomen, legs, feet). His laws also state that healing progresses in reverse chronological, from the most recent ailments to the oldest. The body attempts to heal its most recent (acute) injuries or disorders before it tackles older, chronic conditions.

According to homeopaths, homeopathy claims all this without producing any side effects whatsoever. Unlike antibiotics and other such medicines, homeopathic pills do not hamper digestion, nor lower body's resistance. Neither do they cause any allergies nor cause any damage even if taken over a long period.

Application:

If you suffer from a chronic health problem, you should be aware that homeopathic treatment will take time and patience. You should be prepared to commit to six months or more of treatment before the problem is resolved. Also, a homeopathic doctor may suggest changes in diet and lifestyle as part of the treatment. If you are unable to commit to this, you should consider another form of medical practice.

Homeopathic remedies are championed by many other alternative disciplines. Herbal medicine and ayurveda, for instance, are therapies which treat patients with very similar remedies, in composition, to homeopathic supplements. Furthermore, there is a lot of overlap in the types of remedies administered in these three therapies. One of the more striking concepts that homeopathy supports but the other two do not is the idea of giving an infinitesimal dosage to the patient. Naturopathic therapists also like homeopathy because of its emphasis on the use of natural substances to cure disease.

Modern medicine's perspective:

The use of infinitesimal doses is the most controversial aspect of homeopathy and the reason why most conventional doctors claim it functions only as a placebo. However, a number of controlled studies have been performed which show the effectiveness of homeopathic medicine in treating a number of diseases. The best summary of this research is a study published in the British Medical Journal. The authors of this study are not homeopaths, but medical school professors asked by the Dutch government to review the existing research.
